Seagulls circle in a noisy frenzy, hoping to feast on discarded entrails of squid as one boat pulls in another catch off the coast of Guaymas, Sonora. Giant humboldt squid have only recently started to appear in the Sea of Cortez in large numbers, providing an alternate fishing product for the local economy while shrimp and crab are in the off season. The squid only have a life expectancy of one year, but can grow to be 100 pounds and seven feet long.
